Working with Me

What's your editing style?

To answer this question, I’m going to draw inspiration from one of my favorite (binge-worthy) TV shows: Whether you’re a Ron Swanson or an Ann Perkins, consider me your Leslie Knope. I’m enthusiastic, motivated, and 100% dedicated to the work I do and the people with whom I work. Although we might not agree on every stylistic choice, you can count on honest advice, detailed feedback, and my most creative compliments on the parts of your writing I adore.

Do you have any specialties?

I specialize in speculative fiction, especially fantasy, of any length. I’m also an experienced romance editor. And, as a queer, disabled woman, I enjoy working with authors who share my marginalizations and have stories to tell that are particular to our communities. My favorite projects tend to combine these elements: SFF with a diverse cast and a healthy dash of (typically queer) romance.

What's your favorite part of editing?

I enjoy even the seemingly mundane aspects of editing, but I love the art of storytelling—finding a lyrical turn of phrase or enhancing some particularly vivid imagery—most. In my admittedly biased opinion, I have a good ear and a good eye for words. I enjoy using that talent to, among other things, help writers find their own unique voices and flesh out their worldbuilding.

Is there anything you won't edit?

Yes and no. I can’t think of anything that I would never edit, but I can think of a few specific situations in which I’d feel uncomfortable working with the material. If you’re interested in working with me and your manuscript contains potentially sensitive material, just let me know. I’ll tell you if it will be a problem.

How will I know if you’re the right editor for me?

Well, if you’ve read my website or follow me on Twitter or Instagram and like what I have to say, that’s a pretty good indication that we’ll work well together. Of course, you can ask me any questions you have before committing to working with me, and I’ll ask you some of my own. Ensuring we’re a good fit for each other is as important to me as it is to you.

And yes, I do offer free sample edits of up to 1,000 words for novel-length manuscripts. For shorter pieces, I offer shorter free sample edits.
